A Hard Truth Hidden by Substance Abuse Rehab Centers

Within our modern society, drug abuse has become so rampant that even rehabilitation now includes recovery drugs. We play on this idea that in order to treat any problem, we must throw some form of chemical at it and hope that it was the right one; if it worked, obviously it was due to the “medicine”; if not, we try another one or simply declare the patient incurable. Most of the time, we’re content in the illusion that there’s a chemical imbalance within the body and only the introduction of external chemicals can treat it, but where is the logic in the belief that external chemicals can cure an imbalance that was caused by external chemicals? The idea that detoxifying through use of narcotics is not only counter intuitive, but has proven to fail repeatedly over the years.

In the years since the introduction of substance abuse rehabilitation clinics, there has been an amazing trend towards utilizing narcotics and a rigorously timed schedule. Turning the process into a procedure removes the possibility for human error on the part of the drug and alcohol rehab clinic, but it also removes the human element from the recovering addict. Failure to fit into the regimented rehab program simply means that you aren’t trying hard enough and relapse is a sign of your weakness and a need to return to the program.

In fact, relapse occurs far more often than drug based rehabilitation centers, like methadone clinics, ever speak about. The cause of this is simply the underlying message that “Drug use is okay, as long as it’s an approved drug.” This mentality eventually translates to “Drug use is okay…” in the mind of a recovering addict, not because they jump from healthy and sober to substance abuser, but because they begin a slow return process using approved and prescribed drugs and eventually return to a life of substance dependency.

There are an increasing number of drug-free clinics that have recently been brought to center stage for their ability to truly detoxify their clients and the success rate of graduates who never relapse. These holistic treatment centers emphasize the mentality of removing all narcotic dependencies from the body and returning the person to a fully functioning part of society. Their method, although difficult, revolves around emotional support, individualized care and maintaining a human connection with the patient. This change in paradigm has afforded them some of the highest success rates in the industry and an astounding record of accomplishment for people seeking help. While this road is rarely easy, it is the road most likely to reduce the chances of continued substance abuse and eventual relapse.
